Snedeker earns second title of season in Canada

Brandt Snedeker became the fourth player to win multiple times this season, capturing the RBC Canadian Open by three shots on Sunday. Here’s the skinny on the final round at Glen Abbey:

The leaderboard: Snedeker (-16), Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Jason Bohn, William McGirt all at -13.

What it means: It’s the second title of the season (and sixth of his career) for Snedeker, who blazed out of the gates this season, including a win at Pebble Beach, before being sidelined with a rib injury. He’s been close to recapturing that championship form recently, posting three consecutive finishes inside the top 20 (including both summer Opens), and he broke through again in Canada to join Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar as the only players who have won multiple titles on the 2013 Tour.

Round of the day: Snedeker built a three-shot lead on the opening nine, but he found himself in a share of the lead late after a 12th-hole bogey and Dustin Johnson surge. After Johnson made a mess of the 17th hole, however, Snedeker buried a 12-foot birdie putt on 16 to move three shots clear. He closed with 70.

Best of the rest: William McGirt, a runner-up last year in Canada, shot a final-round 68 in windy conditions to make a run at the title once again. He was part of the four-way tie for second.

Biggest disappointment: Tied for lead with two holes to play, Johnson launched his tee shot on No. 17 way right out of bounds, left his fourth shot in a bunker, and then needed to make a 5-footer for a triple-bogey 7. The self-immolation dropped Johnson, who opened with 75, into a share of second place.

Shot of the day: Snedeker got up and down out of a greenside bunker on the par-5 16th, holing a 12-foot birdie putt to play the final two holes with a comfortable cushion.

Quote of the day: “This is one I circled at the beginning of the year. This is one I really wanted to play well in. I didn’t have my best stuff today, but boy, I rolled the ball fantastic, I fought really well, and it was a lot of fun coming down the stretch knowing I had to hit some good shots coming in.” – Snedeker
